Having left Lisbon on 13 March, the four astronomers arrived in Funchal, Island of Madeira, on the 14th, coincidentally the day Einstein turned 40. After a city tour, a farewell lunch followed: Davidson and Crommelin returned to Anselm on the way to Pará, while Eddington and Cottingham remained in Madeira, awaiting the ship Portugal, which would lead them to Principe Island.
