Eddington and his companions arrived at Lisbon on March 12. The sub-director of the Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon, Frederico Thomaz Oom, who had helped with the preparations for the trip, was waiting for them. They visited the observatory for about two hours and met the director César Augusto Campos Rodrigues, then 82 years old. They rode in Lisbon, in a car rented for Oom. The city seemed peaceful, though full of soldiers and without police in sight.
